This is a wonderful book for children and adults alike that recalls the fanciful classics of old. A lonely little girl, Lilly lives in a ramshackle Victorian with her beloved parrot Professor Tobias (who talks, of course!) and a motley assortment of animals from guinea pigs to iguanas. Lilly’s mom lives in her own private world, designing giant animal topiaries when she has the strength to get out of bed. When the house almost falls into foreclosure, Lilly is forced to raise cash on short notice, enlisting the aid of Tobias and her new best friend, Dorian, the proverbial boy next store (well, not quite) who sports a vestigial tail. With the help of some magic bowku seeds, the three sleuths find out some not-so-nice-things about the local pet store and its proprietor that will keep readers on the edge of their seats! I read Tyger Lilly on smashbooks.com, but the audio tape is equally good and very well-narrated. Combining fantasy, ecology, and suspense, the author has created a unique (and highly visual) story world as well as a memorable gallery of characters. I loved it!
