Carla BeDell

Biography

Growing up the youngest of seven kids, I always looked at life a little differently.
As long as I could remember, I wanted to travel and someday, write a book. My favorite memories are of my parents stuffing 7 kids in a truck camper and taking off on a two-week vacation across the USA. We went everywhere in that truck camper: Canada, Washington DC, South Dakota, Niagara Falls, even New York City. The residents of Harlem did a double-take when they a camper from Illinois, filled with white kids, pass through their streets. It was an adventure.
I love adventure.
When I married my husband, Dan, we had no money and really, really low paying jobs. We decided, against everyone’s better judgment, to put all our belongings in our cars and move to a better life in Charlotte, NC. We struggled the first year, but it was worth it. The best part was we struggled together.
Flash forward less than ten years and we are living the American Dream, with six-figure careers and the big house in the country club. A few more years, more money and two children and everything should have been fabulous. But it wasn’t. The fun was gone. We became so serious, so focused on work; there was less time for each other.
By 2006,we knew we couldn’t take it anymore. We were tired, stressed, and needed a change. We bought a 38-foot catamaran sailboat, and in January 2007, sold our house, quit our jobs, gave away our possessions and took our six-year-old daughter and ten-year-old son on an adventure.
Over the next four years we sailed the Caribbean, backpacked through South America, and took a train and RV trip across the US. We lived, laughed, loved and became closer as a family.
When we returned to the US, I was passionate about telling my story. I published my book, A Life Without Borders and I began writing, speaking and leading workshops on helping others to break down the borders around their lives; the borders that keep them from living the life of their dreams.
In this book you will find stories that will make you think and stories that will make you laugh and all of them I hope will make you look at life differently.
