Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small city near the mountains. It was nice because the African-American community was more cohesive. We had cultural festivals, clubs and organizations, debutante balls... We also had the "eyes everywhere" - meaning that we looked out for one another. It's where I learned to smile when I saw someone that looked like me.
Now that I live in a larger metropolitan area, I am SO grateful I did not grow up near a large city. There is no smile anymore. Everyone looks at one another as if they're going to ask them for money. If I could make it happen, I'd move back to my small city. Luckily, I've learned to write through the noise and headaches of living in an area with so many people. Some of my stories take place in this area now because of having lived here.
The influence of living in both areas shows up in my writing.
