Catherine Basten

Biography

I began drawing at an early age; my favorite subject was animals. My grandmother owned a store and graciously provided me all the supplies I needed, while encouraging me to continually improve
As an adult my life was filled with work, family and outdoor activities and my painting was put aside. Years later I picked up painting again; painting on any pallet I could find: wood blocks, metal, paper, ceramics, glass and furniture. I seemed to be hungry to create my style, so I enrolled in every adult class found in the area trying to refine or define my style. After attempting my styles I found my muse, through watching and depicting nature at its best.
Living in the Midwest taught me nature is filled with many precious gifts. The forests are filled with endless natural materials. Hiking enabled me to listen to the wind whistling through the trees, birds singing their sweets songs and insects humming around searching for food. Suddenly realizing nature not only provides us with so many wondrous gifts, it teaches us the importance of living in harmony with nature. Where do animals and insect live through each season? While searching for answers, the idea of writing and illustrating children's books evolved and later became a reality. Come and walk with me and Tiny Wings evolved and all illustration were painted to depict each character realistically.
Poetry is painting scenery with words; hence, I decide to pursue writing poetry. Strive to love, Anticipate with hope, Believe in faith is a journey back to virtues through poetry and stories defining each virtue. Cathy's Candles and The Art of Crafting are two instructional craft books written to promote reusing, recycling and rekindling old crafts. Each book provides 26 Eco-friendly projects.
