Publisher info

Joe Perrone Jr is an author whose diverse background includes a stint as a sports writer with a prominent New Jersey newspaper, the Herald News, and several years spent freelancing as an advertising copy writer. He has had numerous short stories published in the Mid-Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide. In addition to his writing, he spent ten years as a professional fly fishing guide on the historic Beaverkill River in New York's Catskill Mountains. Nearby Roscoe - "Trout Town USA" - serves as the setting for four of the five books in the Matt Davis Mystery series. The five are: “As the Twig is Bent,” "Opening Day," "Twice Bitten," "Broken Promises," and "Deadly Ransom." Roscoe is a place to which Joe returns as often as possible to fish his favorite waters and visit with long-time friends. In addition to the Matt Davis mysteries, Joe authored “Escaping Innocence: A Story of Awakening,” a coming-of-age novel set in the turbulent sixties; “A ‘Real’ Man’s Guide to Divorce (First you bend over and . . . ,” as well as co-authoring “Gone Fishin’ with Kids (How to Take Your Kid Fishing and Still be Friends)” with Manny Luftglass.
In October of 2015, Joe suffered a mild stroke, which served as a wake-up call. He underwent a complete lifestyle change, including switching to a diet that is about 90 percent vegetarian, which resulted in a weight loss of nearly 30 pounds. Unfortunately, the stroke caused an already dicey balance system to become even worse. As a result, Joe’s days of wade fishing his beloved Catskill trout streams with fly rod in hand may be nearing an end. He’s still fishing, but more often than not it’s with a spinning rod (affectionately referred to as a “zip gun” by hardcore fly fishermen). Joe still enjoys cooking (and eating), reading his Kindle, listening to music (anything but hard rock), and spending time with his two granddaughters. He and his wife live in the shadow of Charlotte, North Carolina, in Indian Land, South Carolina, together with Willow the Wonder Dog. Joe welcomes comments and queries from readers via email at: joetheauthor@joeperronejr.com. He makes every effort to respond to all emails promptly. Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?
I started writing seriously when I was hired as a sportswriter for the then Passaic-Clifton Herald News in New Jersey in 1970.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was past the age of 60 when I decided I'd had enough of banging my head against the "legitimate publishing" wall. I felt my work was good enough to be published and that if the Big Six couldn't handle the chore, I'd just go out and do it myself.

The journey of enlightenment is laugh-aloud funny and gut-wrenching, as David Justin discovers that coming-of-age is more than just a five-minute roll in the hay culminating in a thirty-second celebratory shower. Smashwords book reviews by Joe Perrone Jr.

  • Pieces on Dec. 02, 2009

By rights, a debut novel should be flawed. But, if you’re looking for shortcomings in Pieces, the initial offering from newcomer Julia Dudek, your search may be as fruitless as that of Diogenes. Starting slow, and building speed like a steam locomotive with its engine stoked by a madman, Pieces is not only compelling, but is unrelenting. Its characters are fully drawn, its plot as sophisticated as any in recent memory, and its ability to draw the reader in is unparalleled. This thriller packs a wallop worthy of any literary heavyweight. If this is just the beginning, the future can only be of star magnitude. Can’t wait for more! • The Other Side of Life (Book #1, Cyberpunk Elven Trilogy) on Jan. 26, 2012

I must preface my review by stating that I am a sixty-six year old man whose preferred genres are detective mysteries and non-fiction. Having said that, I can state categorically that I thoroughly enjoyed The Other Side of Life by Jess C. Scott. At a time well in the future, two young girls, Anya, and her friend, Leticia, encounter a trio of elves who enlist their help in recovering an artifact and returning it to its rightful owners. In the process, Anya gets more than she bargained for when she develops a love interest in the leader of the trio, an engaging character named Nin. I really enjoyed the way Miss Scott designed not only an elven world, but also a new language to go along with it. There are touches of “cyberpunk” and even some “Goth” along the way that combine to give the book a delightful, futuristic feel so popular with today’s young people. While the story itself is very futuristic and imaginative, the characters and their relationships are so well drawn as to be totally credible. I think this book will appeal especially to fans of science fiction and fantasy—particularly those young people with clearly defined senses of self, who yearn for a world that is heavy on acceptance for both offbeat and non-mainstream lifestyles. The Other Side of Life is a well thought out, beautifully crafted fantasy novel with a great plot and fully-drawn characters that are alive and engaging. It’s a book that will leave readers begging for more from this very talented writer. Congratulations, Jess, on a job well done.
