Chantelle Nay

Biography

I grew up in Pleasant Grove Utah where I met and married my high school sweetheart. Now I live in the tiny town of Axtell, Utah with my husband, six kids, and a whole lot of farm animals. I love to read, and I love to paint wildlife.
Young love is one of my favorite things to write about and it's always more fun if there's a hard choice that has to be made or an unexpected twist at the end.
Everyone loves romance!

Smashwords Interview

How do you approach cover design?
I love art and creating things. That's probably why I enjoy writing so much. I get to create characters and stories and lives. When I first started writing, I was concerned about going with a traditional publisher because friends of mine who were already published said you had little or no say on cover design. I believe the cover is an important part of your book. It's the first thing people see. I do my own cover design because I want the characters and mood represented on the cover to give people an accurate feeling of what my book is about. On my Eternal series of books I chose not to show the faces of the main characters on the cover. This is because I want everyone to be able to use their own imagination as to what the characters look like. They can do this either through the description in the book or through experiences of their own, using someone they know, or want to know, to draw upon. I think it makes the characters more personal to the reader. I always have an idea of what a character looks like when I write. When I read, I love to picture the characters in the book the way I think they look. It's really hard for me when I read a book about a main character with long black hair and emerald green eyes, but the cover designer obviously hasn't read the book, because they put a blonde girl with blue eyes on the cover. (It's happened more than once) So for me, designing my own cover is the only way to go. I'm not a professional at it yet, but I'm getting better.
What are your favorite books, and why?
I love the Twilight series. They really drew me into the story line and the lives and emotions of the characters. Sometimes when I would leave the book, I would find myself wondering what the characters were doing while I was gone. That is a sign of a good author and a great story, in my opinion. It shows that your fictional characters have enough depth, that your reader actually considers them to be real people leading real lives. When the series was over, I was a little sad that I couldn't continue on being a part of these people's (or vampires) lives.

I also love the Mortal Instruments series. Again, the author was able to suck me in and make the characters alive. I also found myself constantly amazed by Cassandra Clare's ability to have so many characters doing so many things at the same time, and being able to keep them all straight. There is a lot going on in her stories. She has great organizational skills to be able to pull that off without a hitch.
