One of my favorite things about this book is that it starts with action, allowing the reader to experience the rich, dynamic world the author has created while learning about the characters and their history as the story unfolds. Hadde is a willful and charming main character who stays true to herself throughout the story. She’s not the type to sit back and let others take care of things. On occasion, her stubbornness and naivety of life outside the forest get her into trouble, but her instincts and skill with a bow make her a formidable opponent to any who challenge her. As a huntress, Hadde must provide for the people of her village—a task that has become near impossible as the wasting spreads leaving nothing left to hunt. A mysterious discovery sparks in her a glimmer of hope that it may not be too late for the people of Long Meadow. Determined to find a way to protect them, she sets out on a journey to seek aid from King Boradin of Salador. The story became a real page-turner early on when she encounters Earl Waltas and Sir Nidon, assisting them in a fight against a shared enemy. “No good deed goes unpunished” is a lesson Hadde soon learns while in their company. Seen by the nobles as a wild woman who doesn’t know her place, and treated as such, exposes her vulnerability and sets the tone for upcoming obstacles she will face while traveling in harsh foreign lands ravaged by the wasting. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, the plot would twist and turn in ways I never saw coming. I empathized with Hadde’s struggles, cheered for her victories, and felt the anguish of her failures. Eternal Knight has none of your typical fantasy creatures, such as elves, dwarves, and the like, however if you enjoy vibrant fantasy settings, strong, sympathetic characters, and a hint of magic, then I recommend you give this book a try.
