The Algae Voices of Azule is my first novel and first attempt into commercial writing. By background is in physics. I hold a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in physics. For fifteen years, I worked in the public school system, teaching physics, advanced placement physics, calculus, physical science, and environmental science, teaching in high schools in California, Maryland, and New York, as well as in community colleges and in universities, however my main focus was on teaching physics to the masses in high school. I really enjoyed teaching physics to teenagers for many years. Seeing the light bulb turn on in students and being there when they realized the wonders of nature would always be rare and exciting experience, however, after fifteen years, I decided I needed a change.
When I moved out of public education, I went from the well-established and stable environment of the public school system to a high technology startup; fiber optics. I started doing research on fiber optic components, developing mathematical models for component performance as well as developing new manufacturing strategies to develop new classes of components. This was a really exciting time in my life because I would see an idea I had for a new component go from mathematical modeling on a Monday, to prototype fabrication on Tuesday-Wednesday, to prototype testing on Thursday, to data sheets sent to potential customers on a Friday. Wow. Things really moved fast in a start-up company. I was faced with the opportunity to putting my physics knowledge to work on new ideas and new products; to say the least, it was really an exciting time. Unfortunately, the fiber optics market crashed when the dot-com market boom failed to materialize, and the company went under.
After the demise of the fiber optics company, I was fortunate to have a fortune 500 company’s industrial research institution just down the street from where I lived. At this R&D company, I conducted research on machine vision, automated defect detection systems, holography, robotics, manufacturing systems, laser systems, and numerous small research projects that ranged from plastics manufacturing to health care components. I have the privilege of conducting research with some of the brightest and most creative scientists in the country, if not the world. I’m currently still working at this R&D company and am involved in research around the controlled melting of metals with lasers as well as developing machine-vision based process monitoring systems for high temperature battery manufacturing.
