John Lowstreet has recently written a series of poems in a work entitled IN CADENCED THOUGHT. The book blurb suggests that those who “appreciate rhythm and rhyme” will like these poems. In the main, this is accurate; at least I enjoyed my read. One caveat: in at least one place a non christian, or a less well read Christian, might miss some of the point. For example, in THUNDER he writes “like Moses’ withered rod.” In just a few places I had some questions. For example, in LOVE he writes “it flies higher than a crane.” My personal image of a crane is not of a high flying bird; perhaps it was used for rhyme. In A LESSER LIGHT I had trouble with the phrase “a soft unseen” but the immediately preceding phrase “a promise out of place” was evocative. In POVERTY there was a catching phrase “their lives are confined by the walls on a street.” I do not know if it was the author’s intention, but it cleverly took me to the financial Wall Street. I enjoyed THE BIRD and HELLO as clever and tight poems. My belief is that the author is correct: those who appreciate rhythm and rhyme will enjoy this book. Richard Cardner 3/17/13
