About the Author
Dean Crasgail
1956 –
Dean Patrick Crasgail was born in Montana in the middle of a blizzard. He is the second of four children, having one older brother, and a younger brother and sister. Growing up in Montana he and his brothers were afforded many opportunities for “adventure” including many hours of climbing trees as the three built multiple tree forts.
Dean completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in British History at a major US college on the west coast, working between semesters as either a hired hand on a fishing fleet in the area, or as a wrangler at home in his native Montana . After finishing college he moved to the UK where he now lives. While he works near London, Dean’s joy is travelling the countryside of Great Britain, frequenting its antiquities and villages. Dean has a love for anything historic: churches; graveyards; castles; ruins and most notably, pubs. He has often said that while he enjoys people watching in crowded cities, he prefers the quiet and solitude of the local British hamlets, and listening to the local tales being spun at the public houses over dinner. Over the many years, he’s accumulated a history of faces and places from his travels, compiling an extensive list of impressions that often find their way into his works.
Dean’s love of storytelling came from sharing a bedroom with his two brothers while growing up. Early in their lives their day normally ended with one of the three telling a story until the other two fell asleep. Dean was chided many times by his parents for his ability to keep both of his brothers from their sleep. After sharing some of his observations of the faces and places he observed with his brothers and sister at a recent family reunion, Dean was encouraged to return to his story telling ways, giving birth to his first book, Draoidh’s Dream.
Midway through his career Dean met the love of his life, Tara. Tara provided Dean with endless opportunities to add additional places and faces to his list as the two spent as much time as possible exploring her home in Ireland. Many of Tara’s loves mirrors Dean’s, including her love of the wild, the sounds of nature and the peace and tranquility of the trees of any forest. But she also helped Dean expand his travel horizons as the two have now travelled throughout the world in a haphazard pattern that befits their whims.
Dean loves to cook, and he and Tara’s loves extend to good food, wine and engaging conversation, that often times take place during and after dinner and into the wee hours of the evening. They live quietly in a cottage in the British country side where Dean hopes to continue writing in an attempt to give others the chance to visualize the faces and places that continue to fascinate him and fire his imagination.
