Dennis Herrick


Biography

Dennis Herrick is the author of several short stories, most of them involving the American Southwest and often featuring different tribes of Pueblo Indians.

He won the 2004 Tony Hillerman Mystery Writing Contest for his short story "Hunting Season," and he won the 2010 Society of Southwestern Authors Writing Contest for his short story "Missing." He is the author of several published short stories and one book.

A native of Michigan, he and his wife now live on the west bank of the Rio Grande between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Herrick is a former daily newspaper reporter and weekly newspaper publisher and owner. He is an emeritus member of the journalism faculty at the University of New Mexico.

A short story of 10 pages. An 85-year-old Cochiti Pueblo man is dying of cancer, but when his daughter tries to put him into a hospital, he flees to the mountains instead to finish his final days. This story, told with a light touch of humor, won the 2010 Society of Southwestern Authors Writing Contest and was published in the 2010 issue of Story Teller magazine.
