"My Second Period" is written from the perspective of someone that has experienced the quagmire of public education. Many of the stated situations are obviously based upon real events. The pressure to "teach for the test" is very real and unfortunate for both the teachers and the students.
Limited language skills and the lack of parental involvement underscore the need for drastic changes in our current system of public education. Corporate involvement is need to help train students with the skill sets needed. Technical/Trade based skills are necessary to meet the needs of our constantly changing economy.
A cleverly written in satirical style, often with tongue in cheek examples of life in today's classrooms. A fun read with uniquely stated situations that have serious implications.
"Young Scientists" obviously learned a great deal from Mr. Smith and Ms. Saint Jane's classes.
The ending is a classic reminder that great teachers rely heavily on a sense of humor to capture the attention of their students.
I highly recommend this book.
