What's the story behind your latest book?
I started writing Straight Men in Gay Bars as a memoir piece, but found that the truth was too hard to admit and overall quite boring. When I decided to add a little fiction into my story, I wanted to add a twist to the contemporary love triangle, which typically is man or woman must leave bitchy partner in order to be with obvious soul mate. I came up with concept of, 'What if both women were faultless and the protagonist was a bastard'. It happens; women fall for men who are undeserving of their affections.
The setting is accurate, I did move from the sheltered suburbs of Montreal to live in downtown Vancouver. It was my first real contact with the LGBT community. And as I say in the book, "If you have ever wanted to learn how to speak French, move to France. If you want to become more desensitized to homosexual activities, move to the West End."
