Suz Black
Biography
Suz Black is Australian, born and bred. Having avoided reality for as long as possible by taking five years to graduate university, she now works the 9-to-5 in an office with a nice view of other offices. She enjoys her job, but finds the real world exhausting.
For the last ten years or so, Suz has been writing on and off, in various formats, and her short stories, long stories, fanfic and roleplay characters are scattered across many sites and pseudonyms on the internet. These days she devotes herself more or less exclusively to original fiction, either fantasy or historical. She particularly likes to write characters who make sensible life choices, no matter how outlandish the situation they may be in. She likes romances where the characters would have something in common to talk about over tea, and plots where nobody does anything flagrantly against their interest for no reason. She thinks a fantastic setting is no excuse for anyone being silly.
Suz has been a faithful participant of NaNoWriMo since 2008 and since 2010 has been writing a web serial, “A Frequent Traveller’s Guide to Jovan”, which is about the two uncles of a young Empress, set in a fantasy country that is rather like if Ancient Rome had lasted until the renaissance. It contains intrigue, sword fighting, slavery, politics, sarcasm and lots of sex.
Like most writers, Suz loves reading: Georgette Heyer is an eternal favourite, along with Juliet Marillier, Anne Bishop, Jacqueline Carey, Lois McMaster Bujold and Megan Whalen Turner. At present she is reading her way through every World War I book ever: Good-bye To All That by Robert Graves is a particular favourite.
Suz’s friends characterise her as irritable and sarcastic and prone to passive-aggression, with an annoying habit of reminding people of their manners. She likes travelling, knowing everything, The Weakerthans, musicals, costume dramas, Kara Thrace, Rufus Wainwright, King Charles II of England, and Vancouver.
