Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Marshall, Tx. Marshall influenced my writing in a huge way. My family first and foremost have always believed in me, no matter what it is that I have done. So, when embarking on writing books, they were so supportive, and it gave me so much confidence. They also reminded me of different capers that my friends and I got ourselves into, that I was able to incorporate into Destinee's life. My friends, the people that I was around mostly, bring a lot of color to my writing. That is, they make it come to life. Most of my teachers in Marshall were big influences on me. I remember every smile, every kind word, and all of the encouragement; because that's what has influenced me the most, the words and deeds that made me ponder, and think... in a different way.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in high school. My senior year I wrote an essay, and entered it into our Regional competions. It won. I took it to the National ACT-SO competions in Chicago, and although I didn't win there, it gave me a greater respect for writing. I did plenty of other things, before writing called me back. Having that early experience to draw from has been invaluable.
