This is the most surprising, understated and captivating tale I have ever read. The writing style pulls no punches and is almost completely devoid of the little literature flourishes you might be used to. 225 pages written by John would be 700 pages written by someone else. He spares no institution or social standards, cutting apart capitalism and religion with a laser knife from the inside; John's picture of the future is ruthless, brutal and uncompromising. Of all the fictional characters I've come across, Ashley is the most intriguing. She operates by a set of rules i can't seem to define, I can't say I understand, only that I'm in awe of her.
