Everyone is exactly like me. There is no one like me. The rough fabric of my cotton nightgown chafes so I lie very still. They say my discomfort comes from being built like one accustomed to niceties. How is that fair when I myself have never experienced anything but copies of the real thing? My entire life is an imitation. I am an Imitation.

Hybrids. If I had to choose one word to sum up all of my problems, this would be it. Without hybrids, I wouldn’t have to watch my best friend slowly becoming a monster. Without hybrids, I could let go of the mentality “hunt or be hunted.” I wouldn’t have to be on guard that losing my temper meant losing my shape. I wouldn't have Wesley St. John.

I killed a girl last night. I did it with my bare hands and an old piece of pipe I found lying next to the dumpster. But that’s not the part that got me. The part that scared me, the part I can’t seem to wrap my head around and still has me reeling, was that when she charged me, her body shifted – and then she was a wolf.

Just finished Banished, a new short story by Jen Wylie, and I was impressed! I recently read The Forgotten Echo, another of her shorts, and I liked it, but I liked this one even more! It drew me in right away. Firestarting. Loss. And fear of more of both. And those are all in chapter 1! The story was fun and imaginative and the sentence structure was short and punchy, which kept the story moving along, and made it an easy read. Alot happened in just a small amount of pages, which will make this story pefect for middle grade readers (its intended audience.) But even for me (an adult) it was intriguing and fascinating. (The ducks were very imaginative!) And I loved Ever, with it's constantly changing sky colors, that signal the time of day, and pink sandy desert that runs right into a dense jungle. Jen managed to create a world that will draw in a reader of any age. Can't wait to read more!

I meant to download this story and save it for later but once I'd started, I couldn't stop. Very well-written and even though it's not a full-length novel, I was connected to the character in a way that made me wish for a different ending for her. Great story!
