  • Cavalier's Call on Feb. 01, 2012

Gripping and Bold: Solid writing, gripping action, bold characters and a vivivdly staged period setting, make Cavalier's Call a winning historical novel. The story also offers an informative history lesson, in some of the less known aspects of Portugal's development, prior to the Age of Discovery. Joao de Aviz is the unwilling hero, a prince to King Pedro of Portugal who ultimately leads the country to independence and to becoming a major player in sea discovery. As part of the story, Joao is commissioned to defend a peasant against false charges. The court case brings to life the manner in which law was litigated during that era, with real accounts of actual case law. The events that unfold are breathtaking. The plot is well constructed and the revelation at the conclusion, of the spy who is secretly peddling Portugal's military secrets to Castile, comes as a surprise. This is one the best historical novels that I have encountered.
