DEREK MURPHY grew up in Portland, Oregon, where he participated in Episcopalean services as an acolyte. His interest in religious studies and biblical history led him to the Mediterranean island of Malta, where he graduated cum laude with a major in theology and a minor in philosophy and classical languages. In 2010 he received his master’s in comparative literature from Cheng Kung University with a thesis entitled “Mythical influences on formative Christian literature and their inclusion in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.” Derek is now working on his PhD in Foreign Languages and Literature at the National University of Taiwan, with a focus on classical Greek and traditional Chinese writings. As a historical researcher, Murphy hopes his writing can make the lost, dark and dusty fragments of religious history more accessible by breaching the space between academia and popular culture.
