Hugh Fraser

Biography

Hugh was born in the village of Dores by Loch Ness.
On his eighth birthday, his father bought him a ‘Mirror dinghy,’ and sailing became a life long passion.
Hugh has worked with Highland gamekeepers, water bailiffs, shepherds and stalkers. He has always enjoyed cooking and experimenting with recipes. He served as an elected member on Nairn District Council and represented them on the river Nairn Fishery board and the Highland river purification Board.
By the nineteen nineties, the lure of ‘sailing away’ overwhelmed him, so he set about, single-handed, to build a ‘live aboard’ forty-foot steel yacht. Nine hard months later ‘Scotia.’ underwent her sea trials in the 1997 Banff to Stravanger yacht race.
Since then they have sailed around the world, going north to Norway, west across the Atlantic and the Pacific and South to New Zealand. They returned to the Mediterranean by way of the South China Sea, and the Suez Canal, in 2010.
