Sally I. Svee Biography

I grew up in a family where the written word was highly revered. As avid readers themselves, our parents read to my sister, brother and me until we could read for ourselves. And since both parents loved poetry, we were treated to frequent recitations. Consequently, I grew up immersed in the works of Robert W. Service, Edgar Allen Poe and others of their ilk, lured and inspired by the rhythm and precision of their rhymes.

Besides having shelves full of books at home, we made weekly trips to the public library as soon as we could read, returning each time with our arms full of adventures just waiting to be experienced. Rainy days or illnesses which kept us housebound were rarely problems, as there was always a book at hand to carry us to sunnier places.

Wanting to write was a logical progression for me. I began in childhood with little rhymes, encouraged by both family and teachers. Stories abounded in my head, but didn't always make it to paper. I was great at starting them, but not so good at 'follow through'. Alas, that remains the case too often, but I did eventually learn that completing a poem or a tale brings its own rewards.

An active member for 30 years in a local Writers Club, I've also attended numerous classes and participated in local, regional and statewide workshops, retreats and symposiums. Memberships in various professional writers groups over the years played roles in developing and honing my style, and all of these contributed to awards and publications in magazines and anthologies and finally, of longer works such as my short story collection and novels.

I truly love writing in all forms - long or short, article or essay, memoir or fiction, light verse or serious poetry. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to share these efforts in the hope that something in them will delight or inspire readers as I have been so delighted and inspired by the written words of others throughout my life.
