Publisher info

I hate talking about myself. Like everyone, I suppose, I am a bit narcissistic, but not egotistical. My own failure for success is that I just do not think much about myself. That is not to say I spend too much time thinking about others. In truth, I should think more of everyone; and there is a dull guilt attached to that confession. There is something of who I am, I am old enough for regrets.

At my age, I am prone to think about immortality. Being an atheist, there seems no alternative but science. Even so, I know that science is beyond my lifetime. I have no faith nor hope, nor do I believe in ghosts, elves, unicorns...

In that hopeless disbelief, I tell stories so I will be remembered after I am dead. What success means to me are hieroglyphics upon a Pharaoh's tomb.

Smashwords Interview

What motivated you to become an indie author?
This is where I start. Every publisher and agent I've appealed to have my books professionally published and distributed has ignored me. That's not wholly true, once awhile there comes a graceful dejection letter. And I think I always get those replies late, long after I submitted a manuscript, because someone feels guilty. I'm motivated to be read, and that's why I'm an indie author. I daydream it will lead to bigger dreams coming true.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is the best. I publish books on B&N and Amazon, too, but Smashwords has helped guide my understanding of ebooks and it has distributed my material the widest by far. If people would buy my ebooks, I hope they buy them here. Smashwords and Lulu are the only two outlets in which I guarantee my latest revisions.

I said I was going to write a Doctor Who story and I’m done. The Time Lord and Lady come to Cupertino, California. They’re here for an art show… Christmas comes later.

Lazarus The Pig is the short story of a wretched propaganda tool referenced in Matthew Sawyer's Pazuzu Trilogy. Time-wise and contrary to the Old Testament siege of Masada, this incident happens after the Chosen Gospel (a forgery of the Book of Mark).

This is a short Jon Pertwee Doctor Who tale - the third Time Lord in the BBC science fiction television series. This time, the Doctor comes to early America - the colonies. Despite cold stares, he has only one thing on his mind, even here in the midst of the American Revolution. Women.

I tell a lot of stories about forgotten gods and breathing life into new creations. This one is absent that bringing-creatures-into-existence mythology. There are no monsters or devils in Beware Forever. This is not a meditation upon evil. Instead, here is the Greco-Roman god Cupid. And he has a dating service in the foothills of Los Angeles, California. Could anyone do a better job in this Age?

Smashwords book reviews by Matthew Sawyer

  • A Pair of Creepy Shorts on March 11, 2011

"Uncollected Temptation" is a gripping and rewarding tale - definitely a recommended read. "Review" delivers strong writing, but it's nightmarish headiness can be unappealing. Skip straight to "Uncollected Temptation" for immediate gratification.
  • What the Dead Fear on May 23, 2011

Wonderful conjuring of ethereal planes and beings. The author does seize on the concept of the Egyptian god Anubis and pays respectable and creative tribute. My favorite piece from Lea Ryan yet.
  • Alive on June 16, 2014

Good story - lacks suspense and it might be a little more animated but the concept is captured. Alive could be twice its length - where that suspense should go.
  • Shiny Things on June 16, 2014

I got a little distracted while reading but the story was building toward GREAT then I hit that last page. It's a perfectly satisfying ending, but that last line on the page before immediately led me to believe Fango would not willingly escape his trap. I'm just not one of those folks satisfied by sudden regrets.
