Smashwords book reviews by Janet McNulty

  • Shadowland on May 15, 2012

The book is very interesting and kept my interest from beginning to end. I love the way it begins with an old man telling a story and being reminded to tell the real story of his past by a stranger, who turns out to be an old friend of his. The descriptions put you there in the story. And it is an interesting retelling of Arthur legend concerning his father’s beginnings. My only problem with the book was that there seemed to be a lot of passive voice and most of the sentences were long and drawn out. Writing in passive voice seems to be the modern way doing things, but I have never liked it. As for the drawn out sentences, those are easily fixed by adding a few short ones. Especially during the fight scenes. Otherwise, it is a good story and I think most will enjoy it.
  • Peter A Darkened Fairytale on June 05, 2013

Peter lives in England and is just hoping for something interesting to do. Then one day Mrs. Kipple gives him a surprise. He soon finds himself stepping through a broom cupboard and into another world of magic, mystical creatures, adventure, and evil. Soon Peter meets all sorts of strange creatures—some friendly and some not—and learns about an evil witch named Cirinian. As he continues in his adventure, Peter finds himself looking for a magic scroll and on a quest to destroy the evil Cirinian. I found this book to very enjoyable. It reminded me some of Alice in Wonderland, but is different in its own light. As a juvenile fiction book, I think kids will find it interesting and thoroughly enjoy it. Many of the characters were developed and each had their own quirks. Though my favorite was the mouse, Mr. Twindle Twoondle. I got lost in the story and didn’t even notice the time spent reading. I do recommend this book for anyone who wants a light-hearted, fun read.
