Smashwords Interview

What's the story behind your last book?
"Rancher's Christmas" is a sweet book about the Johnson family that I've established from my Rancher Series beginning with "Rancher's Girl". All the characters in those six books come together at the ranch in Naples, Nevada (can you guess the actual setting?) for Christmas. And everything that can go wrong, does!
Daughter Janie Ferguson (Being Emma, Darkest Hour, Just Before Dawn) is nine months pregnant, as is daughter-in-law Mandy Johnson (Whisperer) and those babies just don't seem to want to be born! Grandfather Sam Cable (Rancher's Girl) has a problem that throws a kink into the works and the ranch itself is in major trouble. The biggest subplot is about Joey Johnson and long-time girlfriend Anna Bates. Joey can't seem to get his act together and she's come home for Christmas with a fiancé!
I wrote this book because I dearly love all these characters and wanted to bring them together. It's hard as a writer to say goodbye to some characters, which is why a series works out well sometimes. I had set up Janie's pregnancy from "Just Before Dawn" and thought it was time for the ranch to undergo some difficulties. A subplot dormant for too long. The story with Joey and Anna had been building throughout all six books of the series and I thought I'd finally put some sort of resolution to their struggles. It was definitely a labor of love for me and, hopefully, enjoyable for you, the reader. Happy reading!
What are you working on next?
Westerns are near and dear to my heart… I love Western movies as much as Western books and living in Nevada helps with my Old West ambience.
I started The Westerners Series with a reference to water in all the titles -- "Riding the River," "Stream Ran Dry," and "Lonesome Creek." Riding the river is an old cowboy expression that you'll have to read the book to learn what it means… No hints except to say it has nothing to do with a river. Ha… But there is a great horse drive through Nevada wilderness.
"Stream Ran Dry" will be published Christmas Day and was a labor of love. Both books are set in Nevada with composites of characters that I've met. The book cover for "Stream" is of a young cowboy just before he goes into the rodeo arena for his event and the subplot about a federal agency squaring off with locals was a real one.
The book I've working on now is "Lonesome Creek" set in Murphys, California. Murphys is an old gold mining town just a few hours from where I live and down Highway 49, the Gold Country Highway. Lots of Old West flavor and sights. I love to introduce characters that are counterpoint to one another. For example, in "Transparency," I paired a corporate raider, a hotshot financier with a concert pianist. For "Lonesome Creek," I'm pairing a lawyer with a rancher. To say they have differences, is putting it mildly.
For the next book in the series, I'm thinking about calling it "Cool Water" and will involve park rangers in Yosemite National Park.
I hope you enjoy the books and happy reading!

I liked this very much. It reminded me of an old Bugs Buuny cartoon ( sorry if that offends), where Daffy Duck goes from one setting and job to another - cowboy, pilot. It turns out Bugs was creating him as the story went along. Nicely written. Interesting British terms: pulled tongues. The American version is 'stuck his tongue out'. Enjoyable...
