Biography

Jenna Elizabeth Johnson grew up and still resides on the Central Coast of California, the place that has become the inspiration for the setting for many of her books.

Miss Johnson has a degree in Art Practice with an emphasis in Celtic Studies from the University of California at Berkeley. She now draws much of her insight from the myths and legends of ancient Ireland to help set the theme for her books.

Besides writing and drawing, Miss Johnson enjoys reading, gardening, camping and hiking. In her free time she also practices the art of long sword combat and traditional archery.

    • Dark Currents (The Emperor's Edge Book 2) on Nov. 21, 2011

      Finally, the sequel to 'Emperor's Edge'! And this one is as good as, if not better, than the first. Amaranthe and her gang have stumbled upon a new dilemma facing the empire: someone is poisoning the city's water supply. Of course, Amaranthe and her team don't hesitate to take up the challenge, and naturally, mayhem and adventure ensue. I'll not go into detail (that would spoil the story), but if you've read any of Buroker's other books, you will not be disappointed with this one. Okay, you might be disappointed that it ends and there isn't a third book ready and waiting in the wings . . . In this installment, we get to spend a little more time with Books and get to see his perspective on being a member of this unlikely group. Maldynado is as ridiculous and charming as ever (making me laugh out loud on several occasions). Akstyr and Basilard help glue the team together with Akstyr's typical teen surliness and Basilard's calm support (though I do hope to learn more about them in future books). As for Sicarius, we finally get to learn some more of his secrets, and he even learns to tease Amaranthe, in a very Sicarius-like way of course. All in all, another chapter in a story I can't get enough of. The character driven plot is well developed, the dialogue witty and engaging, and the action and adventure is non-stop. Eagerly awaiting what Miss Buroker has planned next; hopefully I won't have to wait too long!

      Once again, Miss Buroker produces an entertaining tale of adventure and danger in her sequel to 'Flash Gold'. Kali has managed to set up another shop with her new partner, Cedar, and things seem relatively calm for them until Kali's old beau shows up with a business proposition and Cedar gets wind of his long-time nemesis being in town. Of course, mayhem and chaos ensue and the two of them soon become caught up in a deadly situation. I think one of my favorite aspects of this series is how the characters find their way out of tight situations: not with mere brute force (which Cedar could get away with considering his excellent marksmanship), but by also thinking things through and using the laws of physics to outmaneuver their enemies when all odds seem to be stacked against them. I was also happy with the further development of Kali and Cedar's relationship in this book, as well as their growth as individuals. The reader is shown a brief glimpse into their pasts and we finally get to learn Cedar's real name. Also, the arrival of a new threat, an old business partner of Kali's father and her own intriguig inventions, helps set up a new challenge for Kali and Cedar they'll have to face in (hopefully) future books. In conclusion, the character development, once again, is up to my strict standards; the action is, if not constantly present, always looming in the background waiting to thwart our heroes; we get another fun invention or two from Kali (I especially like the spud gun at the end); and the reader is introduced to another formidable enemy who may or may not have survived the battle at the end of the book. A very entertaining read indeed! My only question is: how long will we have to wait for 'Flash Gold' book three?

      Having finished The Emperor's Edge, I have to say I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. The book itself is well-written; the author using a varied vocabulary with a dash of humor nestled amongst the dialogue. The characters, in my opinion, are wonderful. Amaranthe, the main female protagonist, is a very strong lead and comes off as a genuine, able leader. Her companions, all male of varying ages and `occupations', are very likeable as well and the diverse relationships between all of them grow throughout the book. I won't give a synopsis, since that is provided in the book description, but I'm much impressed with the author's style and the world she has created. Miss Buroker has managed to interlace a fast-paced and well executed plot while creating a cast of characters that, while sporting their handful of faults, bring along a list of assets and virtues as well. I can't wait for the sequel to come out, and I'll be sure to check out her other books while I'm waiting.

      Aaaah, there is nothing better than getting a Lindsay Buroker short to appease one's appetite while waiting for the next EE novel to come out . . . And this one doesn't disappoint! In Assassin's Curse, while Amaranthe and Sicarius are out training, evidence of trouble suddenly arises. And Amaranthe, being a magnet for trouble (and eager to cut training with Sicarius a bit short, of course), eagerly insists they check it out. What follows is a haunting mini-adventure involving an ancient curse, some dangerous machinery and a late night swim. If you are a fan of Lindsay's other books, you will definitely appreciate this newest addition - and we even get a tidbit of information on Sicarius' past . . . ;) Thanks again Lindsay and I cannot wait for the next book!
