These rewarding stories are informative, personal, and poignant. And they are made more poignant yet, given the hellish experience of the Afghanis since Hart's time there. One comes to relish the accounts of daily interactions described by Hart. The special brand of Afghani friendship, oft remarked upon but seldom well explained, comes through in these engaging vignettes. Those longing for a glimpse of Afghanis before the great affliction will be delighted to find them here.
