I finished the book late last night. First I have to say that for me the book had two strikes against it from the beginning. The age of the boy and an alligator race. ( I've never read this category before) I must say that despite my doubts Thomas pulled it off, and very well at that. From the beginning I was captured by his writing style and the characters were great! Towards the end of the first hundred pages I stopped thinking about the impossibility of an 8 year old being capable of leading this and and just really started getting into the story, once that happened I didnt put it down much. I did get a little tired of the battle simulations at this time and must admit I skimmed a few pages. All in all, despite my misgivings in the beginning, it was a really good book and Thomas Wilson is a great writer that I will definitely look for in the future. I will also be looking forward to the next book ( I assume there will be one )to share in the rest of Alexanders adventure!

I love love love this story! My only complaint is that the book does not stand well on its own. It is simply the first part to a much longer tale. You will not be able to read this book and not buy the next ones, because it stops right in the middle of the story. What happened to the days you could buy a great big novel and the whole story was there, no matter how many pages it took?? Anyway, lets get back to the book. I think the writing is brilliant! The story is unique (at least for me)and very interesting. The characters are wonderful, the descriptions are amazing! I was caught up from the beginning. I have no idea where this story is going to go or what might happen and I love that in a book. I love the creatures, wizards, kings and peasants. The history and beliefs of these ancient people have me completely captivated. I will read every story Stephen Goldin writes, no matter how many books are in the series. I think he is that good! Another favorite Stephen in my Authors list!

I had big expectations for this book and I was disappointed. I did like it, but not allot. there were several times that things were said or hinted at that never happened and the repetition of phrases and sentences was way over the top. It really started to drive me crazy. I cant put my finger on the other reasons this book was hard for me but in general the characters and the story itself went back and forth from believable to unbelievable, realistic to unrealistic to many times. There were references at least 3 times to events and personality traits that I recognized from other shows I've seen and books I've read. Her clutzy accident prone issues were way over the top and I found myself not believing it. I do feel invested in the story and have mixed emotions about the next book. I hope it gets better and I can leave a better review next time.

I really enjoyed this book! It was a great story with great characters and a really good and original plot. The descriptiveness of the world Jason has created is excellent! I was surprised to find myself on the last page and I am so glad the next book is now available. I would have been disappointed if I would have had to wait.
