Biography
John Dickinson was born in Coventry, England, where he lived until finding his way to Australia, which he now calls home. After leaving school early John progressed through a series of occupations. Following a stint in the merchant navy, he served with the Australian armed forces in Viet Nam, worked as a carpenter, landscaper, retail manager and fast food area manager, before finally establishing a niche, working for people with disabilities. In particular, John was drawn to supporting people with chronic behavioural issues, schizophrenia and profound brain injury. Passionate about his work, John became recognised as a reformist, and at the peak of his career, was responsible for revitalising the, Brain Injury Association of Queensland into a world leader in the advocacy and support of people who were marginalised by society. John was also elected by his peers to lead the National reform of Associations for people with brain injury and, as the National President, paved the way for a dramatically improved national response.
Throughout all this, John's first love was art and literature. Since childhood John has created stories, paintings and sculpture.
In 1995, John and his wife moved to live on Karragarra Island, off the coast of Queensland, to devote his life to writing and painting. John has now retired from public life to enjoy a relaxed and humble lifestyle that allows him to concentrate on his passion to create.
