Kat Yares has been writing fiction her entire adult life. She is an author, screenwriter and indie filmmaker. Her short fiction has appeared in numerous print publications and online. She was first accepted into the Horror Writers Association in 2001 and is a member today.
Her fiction is primarily in the horror/thriller genres. Unlike many, she writes horror not to gross out or startle her readers, but to make them think. Most of her stories are mind games and deal with mans (or woman's) inhumanity to man (or woman).
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. As a child, I heard many stories of Appalachia and over time some of those stories have made it into my work.
When did you first start writing?
I think I've been writing stories since I was able to read and write. I know I wrote an absolutely horrid gothic romance novel around age 11.
