Kevin Johnson
Biography
It's safe to say that Kevin Johnson lives most of his life in his head. When he's not daydreaming or plotting story ideas, he's teaching and writing.
Born in Homestead Air Force Base, he became a "citizen of the world" (those are his words) as his father was stationed from base to base every few years. From school to school, Kevin always remembered loving to read and write--mostly for the escape from reality.
Kevin lived with his dad, mom, and brother in Germany for four years, where he was lucky to see the Berlin Wall come down and both sides of his mother's Haimat (home country) come together for the first time in thirty years.
In 1997, Kevin's father retired from the military and brought his family to Tucson, Arizona, where he has lived ever since. It may just be the only place he can say he's "from", having lived there for over a decade. It was in high school and college that Kevin really began to write and study the art of the English language.
In 1999, Kevin graduated 8th in his class in Mountain View High School. He attended Arizona International College, a now-defunct liberal arts college with an international focus, at the University of Arizona. It was during his freshman composition class here that Kevin remembers getting his first non-family member admirer of his writings. It was a personal essay about visiting his Opa in Germany when he was younger.
When Kevin graduated in 2003, he really had no idea what to do, so he decided to write screenplays and work in various retail stores. Finding a distaste for management opportunities, Kevin decided to teach and found his calling as a middle school writing teacher at Coronado K-8 in Tucson, Arizona.
Kevin shares his love of books and novel writing every November, when all of his seventh graders join him for National Novel Writing Month.
