Read more reviews on my blog Coffee Books & Lipgloss http://coffeebooksandlipgloss.blogspot.com/ The Athena Effect 5 Stars Anyone who reads any of my reviews or has visited my blog will know that I'm a sucker for romance and paranormal romance. I don't lean much towards books that don't give me my 'hot love fix'... I'm also religious on only picking up books that I'm almost certain will blow me away... If I don't 'feel it' I don't read it. It may sound simple minded but I've been horribly burnt in the past so... recently I've become more strict on my decisions on what to read next and tend to shy away from the unknown... because... I'm a creature of habit and I like to stick to what I know. (and I like guarantees in my life) So imagine my surprise (and some hesitance) to be asked to read and review The Athena Effect... which I must admit totally threw a spanner in my well rounded plan to only read the stuff I pick out from the bunch... BUT I'm a good soul and there was no way I could say no... Hey... got a free book out of it so I guess spending a couple of hours reading through a book wouldn't hurt... and I'd just finished my most recent Kristen Ashely so I was definitely up for a break from emotional drama & turmoil :) Never-the-less... I loaded up the book onto my kindle and last night at about 10pm and I started reading The Athena Effect by Derrolyn Anderson. My very first read from this author and I can honest to God tell you I think my time was put to good use. It took me a couple of pages to actually get into it because the contrast to what I've been reading for a while is vastly different. Ok... so let me break it down for you: Started reading at 10pm... went to bed at 2am (only because I had to be up at 6:30am this morning) Got home from dropping my car off at 7:40am and read straight through until 11:30am. I couldn't put it down - Sleep be damned!!! An unusual take in the strange, paranormal literature I've come to love but refreshing none-the-less. It was once again entertaining to read about a female character being the one who has the strange abilities, with a hot guy pulling out all the guns to stay by her side. Yes... it was awesome that a chick was the cool one for a change and not some squirmy, love-sick and clueless bystander while the hot guy had it all going for him. Cal (the girl version) was so cute. I really liked her. She was sweet and innocent but not the cheesy kind. No... her character was loving and easy to accept and I didn't hold any hostle or irritated emotions towards her at all... not once in the entire book did I think to myself "Oh FFS get over it woman"... She was well rounded and adorable just as she was packaged and awarded to us in The Athena Effect. Cal (the guy version) was perfect! He was strong and loving... deeply smitten by Cal (the girl version). I loved how easily their relationship flowed. There was no nonsense of separation in their connection or anything like that. It was free and it was flowing across the pages flawlessly. I loved how even though C1 and C2 were worlds apart in life experience... they seemed to compliment one another and brought out experiences and feelings in each another that simply clicked together easily. I can't complain about them at all. Now I admit again that it took me a couple of pages to actually focus and get into it but that's usually how it is for me anyway when I read a book involving a guy and a girl and then some romance. I only rest easily once both characters have made their appearances. That way I know the rest of the book will feature both of them and the story is likely to progress from that point. So it's not strange that I had to push through to get there... BTW it wasn't a long wait at all and the entire book focused on them (Which I loved!) My reviews never consist of ramblings about the storyline since I always provide a description at the top of the posts so I won't be doing it here either. But All I can say is that the description is not even close to how the actual book turns out. I mean of course it's a summary of it... but it doesn't do it any justice.... so if you read the book summary and feel yourself thinking you'll give it a skip then I believe it's my duty to let you know that you will be making a huge mistake. I was completely enthralled in The Athena Effect and I know that I will be picking up another book of Derrolyn Anderson very soon. An unique yet simple paranormal twist to a compelling true-love story with beautiful characters you will adore to love! I also believe I read that the second book in this series will be out next year (2013) so I'm super glad about that too since I admit I felt like I was left hanging at the end of this one... which is a good thing I guess since it means I'm going to have to get my hands on the next one as soon as its available! Thank You Derrolyn Anderson for entrusting me to read your book. I'm so glad you sent it my way and you've totally hooked another fan :)
