Smashwords Interview

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I became an indie author to follow the LAW: If you want something done well, do it yourself. And this only happened because nearly all of my experiences with online publishers have been bad ones--even now, I am still fighting an online publisher who I signed a contract with way back in around 2006/7. This publisher is STILL selling three of my non-Silurian books out of contract. This publisher is Kim Richards of Eternal Press; please, any new writers reading this, stay away from anything to do with this woman and her so called publishing companies. Always check online publishers as much as possible before signing contracts with them. So, I'm one of those unlucky writers who have had to truly struggle to be published. For me, the road to getting my books, The Silurian series, out to readers has been a genuine battle that I could only do myself.

After being treated like dirt by these online publishers, I said, No more! The Silurian is far too important to me to just hand over to others to manipulate for their own ends, then eventually, shafting me again. I knew all along that The Silurian was independent writing right from the beginning, and would never fit the requirements of publishers, whether traditional or online.
What do your fans mean to you?

Without readers, being an author is practically meaningless to me.

A good reader, that is someone who has the maturity to read different works with different interpretations without going into a meltdown because the story they're reading is not written in a traditional way, these readers are like gold to me. Many readers view my work with a sniff of disdain because my "King Arthur" is unconventional: the entire Silurian series is in no way based on works of Arthurian genre gone before; and the lead protagonist, Prince Bedwyr, especially in the early books, can be unsympathetic and his bi-sexuality seems to bother those seeking a more traditional Arthur story: the usual elements like Lancelot, Guinevere, Merlin, magic, etc are not there in The Silurian. Some readers don't understand that my books are not based on this Arthurian tradition, but are a whole new interpretation that's entirely my own: this seems to upset a lot of readers, so those who come to my books and read them without preconceived ideas of Arthurian genre novels...gold, just gold.
