First of all, let me admit this: I am a grumpy, critical reader/writer who can find fault with most fiction. I also don't read many romances. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised by Rector's novel. The characters are well-rounded, for the most part, and the author has a talent for short, pithy character descriptions. I very much liked the Depression-era plotting and descriptions. I came to care about the characters, even Hero, a man of less than stellar qualities. My main complaint has a silver lining. The second part of the book seemed a little rushed. This is a good thing, really. I wanted to stay with the characters in a fully elaborated passage of time, with more detail like the Depression times. All in all, a good read.
