Smashwords book reviews by Linda Andrews

  • A Knight in Her Arms on Oct. 12, 2011

For saving a woman and her daughter from raiders, Knight Gavin Rogueforth is given a chance at peace and love--in the far future. Museum curator Hannah Falcon craves adventure and excitement. What she's got is her third blind date in a month. She's resigned to her fate until he shows up--a man straight out of her courtly dreams. Even better he fulfills all her fantasies. Hannah and Gavin's tale is a poignant tale of the power of love and finding what you didn't know that you needed. A Knight in her Arms is a sexy short story that rewards the characters and the reader.
  • Maggie Undercover on Nov. 15, 2011

Investigator Maggie McCade is undercover as a Council Falls high school senior trying to figure out who hacked into the local software company. Included in her suspects is the hunky math teacher who has a history that gives him opportunity and could provide her with leverage. Jared Blake moved back home to build a life with his daughter. Unfortunately, the little girl has been distant to him since her mother died and Maggie seems to be the best thing to get through to her. Maggie insinuates herself into their family for the good of her investigation, but their home life brings out a longing that could jeopardize her case and her plans for starting her own investigative business. Jared must keep his distance from Maggie. Their attraction threatens not only his livelihood and reputation but, more importantly, his plans to raise his daughter. Maggie needs to stay and Jared needs her to leave. But love teaches according to its own rules. Counterfeit Love is a sweet love story about the true meaning of home and love. Both Maggie and Jared have a past that has taught them harsh lessons about trust. Ms. Hendricks delivers a page turner where both character's past wars with their desires and I couldn't help but root for their happy ending. But when all the deceptions are revealed, will Maggie and Jared believe enough in love give each other another chance or will they go their separate ways once the hacker is revealed?
  • Emma's Wish on Nov. 16, 2011

Widower Sam Jenkins has made the hardest decision of his life. Knowing he can't raise his children and make a go of his ranch, he decides to send his three children to his late wife's family. Just for a little while, he promises them and himself. Instead of going to live with strangers, they run away and stop for the night to rest and to steal a pie at Emma Witherspoon's house. A carriage accident has left Emma scarred, jilted by her fiancé and alone upon the death of her father. Weighed down by loneliness, she's come to accept that she'll never marry and have children. But the arrival of Sam's children gives her an idea on how to save them from being sent away and give herself a chance at a family. She proposes a marriage of convenience to Sam. Although no one can replace his ex-wife in his heart, Sam accepts for the sake of his children. Emma's Wish is a beautifully written story set in Texas. Emma is a caring, giving woman who's impulsive nature is constantly at odds with a past that has taught her not to trust. Sam is a man willing to do anything to make his children happy, even rewrite his late wife's memory. The care and kindness with which they treat each other helps love to bloom. Can they take a chance on each other or will some lessons be to harsh to overcome? Ms Scott's story is American Western romance at its best. Not since I discovered Jodi Thomas's books have I been so caught up in a story. Highly recommended.
  • Galaxy Girls on Nov. 18, 2011

The planet Kergeron is harsh and brutal. The men are genetically engineered to be warriors and the women breeders. There is no room for finer emotions like love and tenderness, except what a mother feels for her child before it is stripped from her arms. Phryne was born into the Kergeron world and was abused as a breeder. Taking advantage of the chaos of war, Phryne, her mother, cousin and aunt steal a ship and head to Earth. They arrive needing money, money they get from a casino. Their winning sets into motion a series of events that culminates in Phryne seducing a man and bearing his child. Hawk Higgens is a former FBI agent. Phyrne's seduction ruined his career and him for other women. After six years of hunting her, he's finally tracked her down and the child they created that fateful day. But he's not the only one looking for them. Warriors from Kergeron have finally decided to track down Phryne and her family and bring them back to the planet. Galaxy Girls is a well-written scifi romance set on planet Earth. Ms. Ramer does a wonderful job of creating a world full of familial love against a backdrop of distrust. Phryne and her kind are breeders, needing men to fulfill their purpose but hating their brutality. Hawk has experienced his own brutality at the hands of a woman, one who used his love to advance her career. Both will have to overcome their past if they expect to have a future.
  • Codename: Dancer on Nov. 21, 2011

Dani Spevak travels from New Jersey to Scottsdale, Arizona to attend the prestigious Mountain Shadows Performing Arts High School. This is the first time Dani's been on her own. She's enjoying the freedom and opportunities--especially the one to be on a new reality teenage dance show. While being selected from the many dancers is flattering, it soon proves unhealthy. First a stage accident, then a studio fire. Soon it becomes apparent that someone's out to stop the show and the list of suspects keeps growing. Now Dani and her friends must figure how to ensure that the show goes on. Dani's angst, her confidence and her obsession with her perceived shortcomings all make for a character that practically walks off the page. With a light hand, Ms. Brice touches on the topic of anorexia prevalent in such an appearance driven industry as the performing arts. Dani's friends are supportive as they bumble their way through the investigation. For a light and enjoyable read with a touch of mystery look no further than Codename: Dancer.
  • Dragon Blues on Nov. 27, 2011

Noah Long turned human for love, a love that was betrayed. Now 2500 years later, the reincarnated woman he'd loved has returned and she's brought trouble with her. His normal instinct is to take his treasures and run, but one thing makes him stay. Lila Fox has spent her life being strong but it wasn't enough to save her mother or sister. But it was enough to avenge her mother's death and hopefully punish her sister's murderer as well. Unfortunately, she's going to need help, not something she's used to. Now the best man for the job isn't a man at all but a dragon. And he may be the only one strong enough to get the job done, but the cost may be at a price she isn't willing to pay. Nick is a fascinating character. Ms Ramer does an amazing job of showing a man with all a dragon's legendary traits--including his love of treasures. Lila is a strong woman almost to the point of being brittle. Her strength makes her weak, something she'd never admit and only comes to realize in the hunt for her sister's killer. Dragon Blues is a fun read with enough whimsy to soften the dark backdrop of abuse and greed. With a few unanswered questions, I hope that there's a sequel in the works. If you love dragons as much as I do, pick up a copy of Dragon Blues.

  • A Cutthroat Business on Nov. 28, 2011
    (no rating)
Savannah Martin is just starting out in the real estate business. When a call comes on a Saturday morning, she's quick to take it hoping it will lead to her first sale. It leads to a reunion with a bad boy from her past, Rafael Collier, and her first dead body. Cutthroat Business is a charming mystery rife with Southern hospitality and genteel manners. Savannah is a remarkable heroine who's trying to make her way in the modern world while clinging to the comforts of the past and dodging her well meaning family and friends. The story is sassy and funny and features not one, but two love interests, including the smoking hot Rafe. For those who love cozy mysteries, Ms Bennett delivers a tale sure to satisfy.

  • Contract Pending on Nov. 29, 2011

Savannah Martin returns in the third book in the series. She's finally made a sale and is waiting for the appraisal to come in when someone breaks into her apartment and destroys her bedroom. Given her recent history, the police take an interest and it isn't long before the threats against her are linked with the man who isn't her boyfriend, Rafael Collier. Contract Pending is another cozy mystery starring Savannah and is set in Tennessee. I love the mysteries themselves and enjoy the switchbacks and miscues that unravel along the way. But I really love the evolution of characters across the series of books. There isn't just another murder mystery to be solved, it's about uncovering Savannah's true character and desires. Ms Bennett's deft touch has me looking forward to the next book and the new surprises again.
  • Hot Property on Nov. 29, 2011

Savannah Martin would like nothing better than to return to her job selling real estate and put away memories of murder and attempted murder. Fortunately a series of robberies helps until it strikes a little closer to home when her friend and fellow realtor is involved. Unfortunately, so is the man she's kind of interested in, Rafael Collier. Before too long her friend is dead and Rafe is prime suspect material. Savannah has no choice but to do a little investigating on both their behalves. Hot Property is another winner from Ms. Bennet. I loved watching Savannah struggle against her proper upbringing and stretching herself for her friends. Particularly endearing is watching her rail against the restrictions, even as she uses them as a shield to protect herself. The supporting cast is sublime and outrageous, adding just enough misdirection and red herrings to keep the mystery fresh and exciting. If you're in the market for a great cozy mystery, Hot Property might be just what you're searching for. (Sorry, couldn't help the pun)
  • Close to Home on Nov. 29, 2011

Something is rotten in Sweetwater, Tennessee and once more Savannah Martin finds herself in the middle of it. When the body of her sister-in-law turns up in the river, Savannah sets out to prove the accusations around her deceased relative are false. Close to Home differs from the three previous books in that the mystery revolves around her family rather than real estate. Savannah's boyfriend, Rafael Collier comes to the rescue until events force his departure. Fortunately, Savannah's grown a lot over the course of the four books and she's more than capable of dealing with murder. The story is fast-paced with plot lines from the other three books being brought up (The backstory is deftly handled, but I would recommend reading the other three in the series before this book). As usual, Ms Bennett brings together a wonderful, quirky cast to off set the darker themes of the mystery and tell a touching and amazing story.
  • The Baby Race on Nov. 30, 2011

Thanks to her wandering parents, Claire Jensen never knew a permanent home. Now that her parents are dead, she's determined to make sure her half-sister doesn't endure the same fate. But her bid for custody may be short-lived unless she marries the grandson of the town's most powerful matriarch. Abused and neglected as a child, Race Reed rehabilitates mistreated animals and places them in loving homes. That dream is coming to an end if he can't make his mortgage. His grandmother offers him a monetary windfall if he marries and has a son before his cousins. But what starts out as a marriage of convenience quickly becomes complicated. Will they remain safe in their cage of protectiveness or take a chance on love? The Baby Race is a poignant retelling of a classic theme. Ms Hendricks does a wonderful job of slowly unveiling Race's scars and deepest desires. Trusting and naive, Claire is an excellent foil for Race's darker past. While the heat between the two is sometimes scorching, it is the little moments of caring and respect that make The Baby Race a true romance that will last through the ages.
  • A Done Deal on Dec. 21, 2011

Savannah's back and so is Rafe. Unfortunately, no one told her until she stumbled across him and his new girlfriend. She hopes that investigating a rather uncouth bride-to-be will distract her but no such luck. Jealousy lands her in some funny spots. Luckily, Rafe is willing to lend a helping hand. A Done Deal is a wonderful new addition to the story. I love the dual plot lines and the returning cast of characters. While the bodies aren't fresh in this one, there's plenty of mystery to go around.
