Smashwords book reviews by Falcon Ridge Publishing

  • Judas Kiss on Feb. 11, 2011
    star star star star
Dee Hunter is a flawed, complex, vulnerable woman who will stand up for what's right and risk her life doing it. This time, however, she may need help from a man she no longer trusts to navigate the treacherous waters of a corrupt correctional system. Judas Kiss is a straight up adventure, with a dash of mystery, a dollop of romance and a large helping of murderous larceny. Writer Karen McKee grabbed me from the opening scene and kept me captive to the very last word, which I read very late at night. I look forward to more of her stories.
  • Ashes and Light on March 06, 2011

Set in Afghanistan, Ashes and Light tells the story of Khadija, a young Afghan woman who leaves her medical studies behind to help her father after the death of her beloved brother, and Michael, the American she views as her sworn enemy. Their intersecting pasts throw them together when Michael discovers a plot that, if successful, will lead to war between China and America. It’s up to him to put a stop to it, and he can’t do it without Khadija’s help. I enjoyed this story as much for the exotic setting as for the high adventure the two main characters find themselves sharing. Both are conflicted by guilt and divided loyalties, to the point where I was kept on the edge of my seat right up to the end, wondering if their growing love for each other would be enough in the end.
  • Pretense for Murder on Sep. 23, 2011

This short story features the teenage Vallon Drake before she becomes an agent for the American Geological Survey. She’s at school (the AGS Prep Academy, of course) and is a handful for her principal and her guardian. She’s a young woman with extraordinary powers in a school full of extraordinary young people, none of whom she gets along with. And then she finds a body on the school grounds and she suddenly finds out that she didn’t know the meaning of the word “trouble”. Vallon is a smart, independent young woman and I had fun watching her try to figure her way out of this situation. I first met Vallon in Afterburn, where she is a grown woman with a serious problem—how to stop the person trying to rewrite the existence of Seattle. I like this strange world of the American Geological Survey and I look forward to more stories set there.
  • Walter's Christmas-Night Musik on Dec. 02, 2011
    star star star star star
I had downloaded this story months ago, but only read it last night. It's a wonderful story, touching without being maudlin, about Walter, an older man dealing with some hard times, who finds unexpected grace on Christmas Eve. Highly recommended.
  • Gabriel & Mr. Death on Dec. 02, 2011
    star star star star star
I loved this story. This is another one that I had downloaded months ago but only read last night. Despite the subject matter (I mean, c'mon, it's in the title) the story is about life and love and miracles. All of it written in the hound's "voice". What a great job Susan Kroupa did. I sighed. I smiled. I wanted Gabriel the Hound to come live with me. A wonderful story at any time of year, but so perfect for Christmas time.
  • Blood and Magick on Dec. 23, 2011

I've read a number of stories in Karen L. Abrahamson's Cartos world and I can't recommend them highly enough. Original premise, engaging characters, fast-paced... And her stories span centuries. Excellent stuff. Blood and Magick if my favourite of her short stories so far, and that's saying a lot! I really like how she's taken a minor character from The Warden of Power novel and let us see how he became the man he is. Looking forward to more of Ms. Abrahamson's stories.
