Michelle Birbeck

Biography

Michelle is 29 and has been reading and writing her whole life. Her earliest memory of books was when she was five and decided to try and teach her fish how to read by putting her Beatrix Potter books in the fish tank with them.

Since then her love of books has grown, and now she is writing her own and looking forward to seeing them on her shelves, though they won’t be going anywhere near the fish tank.

When she’s not writing, she’s out and about on her motorbike or sitting with her head in a book.

Really enjoyed reading this. Have read it a couple of times since the first time, and I still think it is fantastic!
  • Shadowcat on July 05, 2012

I’ll start by saying I’m glad this was a free download from Smashwords. I double checked the description and nowhere in it did it mention what this book was about, not truly. It is labelled as horror, but what it turned out to be was thinly veiled threats of child abuse in the most disgusting form. However, if you can get past that, or are comfortable reading such things, then there were a couple of other issues with this short story for me. First being the opening. The concept behind it is fantastic, and I’d really like to see more work like this, minus the abuse, but I felt like it needed to be explained a bit more. The concept itself came out as very vague and not very well described. The story also jumped from one time to another, growing with the child in the story, but with very little other than the change in bed, to denote when these changes occurred. I also had an issue with naming in the story. It was done in parts in a very confusing way that left me having to reread parts in order to understand who the author was talking about. This is a 1 star for me. The concept was good, but the content needs to have been stated in the description. Had it been, I would never have read it.

    (no rating)
Finished reading the guide today, and I had one big issue with it, and that's the lack of Word 2010 instructions. I managed to format my document, but I had to guess and go hunting to find half the relevant things. Might be an idea to see about adding word 2010 to the guide seeing as how windows 7 computers won't support much of anything but word 07 and later.
  • The Seduction of Gabriel Stewart on Aug. 04, 2012

I got this free from Smahswords and I wasn’t disappointed. Though I’m not a fan of history for the most part, there are parts that I do like, and this is one of them. The story was beautifully written, well played out, and the erotica parts of it were enjoyable. In fact, there was only one thing stopping me from giving this a full five star rating. There were some persistent errors in spelling that detracted from the story. Not enough to stop me from reading, but enough to make me have to stop and think and reread. Having said that, the story was wonderful, the attention to the details of the time wasn’t too overwhelming and still covered enough so that you know it’s set in a historical time. I enjoyed reading it, and when I had to put it down in the middle, I kept thinking about it and was anxious to get back to it and find out what happened. The synopsis is up on smashwords—just click the picture for a link straight there. It’s a free to download story, so if you’re after a bit of flirty fun without breaking the bank or taking forever to read, go download it. Reviewed for Short, Sweet, and Snappy review blog.
  • Musings while in traffic on Oct. 14, 2012

Not a bad piece of flash fiction. Short and easy to read, and something a lot of people have no doubt done when in traffic. Certainly passed a few minutes!
  • Lady Killer on Oct. 17, 2012

This was a strange one. Horror is something I enjoy reading, so from the description this was right up my alley. And it was, to a certain extent. The storyline was solid, and I really enjoyed the twist at the end. How everything played out in the story made for an enjoyable read. But there were a couple of things that stood out and confused me, which ultimately took away from the reading experience. The first of these being the biggest. There didn’t seem to be any distinction between inner dialogue and speech. All were defined by speech marks, making it appear as though they were all spoken aloud, even though some of them were clearly not. In the areas of the story where it wasn’t so clear whether the words were speech of thought this served to confuse me. Secondly, the dialogue seemed stinted and unnatural. This was mainly because of the lack of contractions used. Lastly is more of a personal feeling regarding horror and murder. It seemed to me that the main character, Rick, should have enjoyed the kill more, taken his time over it more. And certainly if he had killed as much as the story seems to claim, he should have been a lot less anxious over it.

Having read Playground by the same author, I went and downloaded this one, too. And it didn’t disappoint. I may not have enjoyed it as much as Playground, but I did enjoy it, and would happily download anything else by this author. The ending of the story was fantastic. The way everything changed and twisted was a delight to read. Though this story felt a bit jumpy in places, there was only one thing that stood out for me, and that was a punctuation issue. Multiple question and exclamation marks shouldn’t be used, and seeing not just one or two but four or five really pulled me from the story. This combined with the feeling of the story being jumpy led me to give it four stars. Having said that, it is well worth a read.
  • Playground on Oct. 17, 2012

The writing from a child’s point of view was brilliant. The one thing that stood out to me and pulled me out of the story was the use of underlining a word to show emphasis instead of italics. There was also a hint in the direction that the story could have headed that gave me cause to pause, but when I read on, that particular act didn’t happen. The ending, however. Loved it! The twist at the end made me smile and had me wondering. It left me wanting more. So overall, 4 stars. For a free book, well worth the few minutes it takes to read.
  • Last Dance of a Black Widow on Nov. 01, 2012

Though I enjoyed the idea behind the story and the repercussions of a life led in the way portrayed, I felt that it was a story told, not shown, and could have been done in a much better way that gave more details. It may as well have been a list of crimes the woman had committed, detailed by a third party.
  • Hysteria on Nov. 20, 2012

This is the second of Eva Gale’s short stories I’ve read, and I loved it. I’m not one for history, but the occasional historical novel I do enjoy. This is one of those. It isn’t the hot and steamy erotica that 101 Degrees Fahrenheit was, and was more along the lines of The Seduction of Gabriel Stewart, in its slow build and fantastic finale. The only complaint I had, in fact, was that, as with the other stories by Eva Gale, the ending seemed somewhat rushed. Overall though, five stars, and absolutely a recommended read! • 101 Degrees Fahrenheit on Nov. 20, 2012

I’ve read another short by Eva Gale, The Seduction of Gabriel Stewart, and loved it enough that I went and downloaded the rest of the books she had on offer. This was one of them. And though it wasn’t quite up to the same standard as Hysteria and The Seduction of Gabriel Stewart, it was a very enjoyable read. The twist in the middle caught me by surprise, and the heat between the couple was fantastic. In fact, the only complaint I had was that I thought the ending seemed a bit rushed. Other than that, I would say go download it now! Great if you want something short and hot. (reviewed for Short, Sweet, and Snappy, blog)
  • Dead Girls Don't Dance on Nov. 20, 2012

I’m a fan of horror, and this one was almost perfect for me. I loved the concept, the way it was portrayed. There was just the right amount of crazy in the main character to make it not only believable but also make it so that the person wasn’t completely off the deep end. So why was it not a straight five star review? Two things. There was an issue with words and phrases being repeated multiple times, and there was a predicable element to it. For me it was obvious what had happened, and that took some of the surprise away, but at the same time added to the gore factor. Overall, worth downloading and giving a read.
