M L Clark

Biography

I was born and raised in Toronto, then spent around 14 years in Kitchener-Waterloo (also in Ontario) before leaving Canada in 2018. I now live in Medellín, Colombia, where I teach English by day and write in every free hour.

I'm primarily a writer of speculative/science fiction (Analog, Clarkesworld, Lightspeed, GigaNotoSaurus), with a few pieces in year's best anthologies. Last year I finished my first novel, a speculative history set in 1920s-40s Soviet Russia, which is currently seeking representation, and I'm in the process of writing a second, a sort of "The Brothers Karamazov in Space" (in keeping with SF's long history of philosophical storytelling). I also write for Patheos.com's Atheist Channel, where I advocate for a more compassionate and inclusive practice of humanism.

My relationship with Smashwords is tenuous; many folks here churn out content at an impressive rate, but I'm not interested in using this site as a means of making money. Rather, I see this as a place for experimentation. I write in a wide range of forms and genres--far more than I tend to publish--so I use this account to host the unusual-for-me fictions. Some of them may be hits, and some misses. That's okay. Short stories published here will always be free.

Liam Forrester is struggling--with his new, full-torso cast; with disappointing changes at his church right before Christmas; with his class's choice of myth to perform at the next assembly. Why is it so difficult to share how he feels with his family and friends? How can Liam make sense of all his frustrations? What kind of courage does he need to find, to confront all of life's challenges ahead?
