Welcome to Musa Publishing!
"...And when a year was passed and the seasons came round as the months waned, and many days were accomplished, she bare nine daughters, all of one
mind, whose hearts are set upon song and their spirit free from care, a little way from the topmost peak of snowy Olympos. There are their bright dancing-places and beautiful homes, and beside them the Kharites and Himeros live in delight. And they, uttering through their lips a lovely voice, sing the laws of all and the goodly ways of the immortals, uttering their lovely voice. Then went they to Olympos, delighting in their sweet voice, with heavenly song, and the dark earth resounded about them as they chanted, and a lovely sound rose up beneath their feet as they went to their father..." Hesiod, Theogony 1
The Muses, the nine beautiful daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne who became the patron goddessess of the arts in Greek mythology, are frequently summoned by the writer. You hear it all the time. "I'm waiting on my muse." Sometimes, a beautiful woman becomes the 'muse' for a famous painter--like Emma, Lady Hamilton did for Romney. And, of course, the word "music" derives from "muse."
Is it any wonder, then, that we took the term "Musa" (Italian for muse) as our own when we started our own publishing company?
There are a lot of reasons to start a new publishing company. But, you may ask, what are ours?
Well, it's all contained in our mission statement.
At Musa Publishing, the author comes first. Period.
See, we've been in your shoes. The founders of Musa have worked in publishing for a long time. We are writers, editors, artists, designers, financial officers. We've seen the insides of the industry, both the good and the bad. And what does that usually entail?
The author comes last.
We could have said the story comes first. That, too, would be true in a way. The story is always at the top of the list. But behind that story is an author--a writer, working away in whatever corner available, who sweats and breathes and lives that story until it begins to stand on its own. That's why at Musa, we say the writer comes first.
So check out our submissions guidelines. See if this company has something to offer you. One thing we can guarantee. At Musa, the author--you--will come first. Whether you write spec fic or romance, GLBT or contemporary fiction, you will get the same attention to detail and the loving care of the entire house behind you. So if your heart is full of song and your spirit free of care, don't sit around and wait for your muse.
Because Musa is here.
Welcome to the journey.
