Brilliant. Stunningly original, utterly gripping and well-written. An absolutely fascinating exploration of the creative process, full of thrilling and intriguing themes and ideas. Wry asides and wisdom and just generally wonderful.

Courtney Milan is always excellent, and this is another classic. The pacing is slightly different with the two leads being separated by circumstance; her works always focus on character development and familial relationships/friendships as well as the romance, but this felt even more focused on these because of the separation. I love the formula of her books (what is romance if not well-honed and engaging formula), but appreciated the twist on the usual routine. The examination of trauma and belonging - and the way it was communicated through the lens of historical/colonial experiences - was handled sensitively and empathetically.
