What is your writing process?
First of all, I have to be inspired by someone, something, or a personal feeling to write. There are times when I will meditate and pray. My muse will come sometimes spiritually, it is in that moment that there is an overwhelming drive to sit before the computer and type. The plan may come before the free writing or reverse. At this stage I don't think about proofreading or editing, I just write. After I have written everything that comes to mind, I read the work. The ideas can come so fast that I forget what I typed. Afterward, the organizing and research begins. I continue to write and then end with much revision and editing before publishing. My process starts off very spiritual and then mellows as I formulate my thoughts aided by my Creator.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes, Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." She was bold enough to share a glimpse of her childhood. I liked that but when I was 19 years old reading that book (and others by her) I wasn't ready to expose myself and those who impacted me. As I matured, my intentions over the years with my work was to take the knowledge and experience I obtained and teach. Therefore, I have taken the bird out of the cage and set her free--no longer restricted by what people might say or think. I answer to no civic groups, religious institutions, or relatives. I am respectful of others and cautious about content, but truth always prevails in the writing.
