Smashwords Interview

Describe your desk
My desk is an old fashioned oak desk with my computer and printer and a whole lot of books and papers and a half dozen note books of various sizes. It is an unholy mess....but it's my mess if you know what I mean. There are three books by Paul St. Pierre which are stories set in the Chilcotin country of B.C. and are a refuge I run to probably too often.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, a rich land of farms and mountains and rivers. I spent much of my youth exploring that country with my buddies and with my father. I loved the interior of the province with its rolling sagebrush hills and thousands of lakes alive with rainbow trout. After a couple of years at university I ditched that and went exploring B.C. with a friend. We panned for gold ( found some too) and fished and hunted and just plain bummed around doing what we felt like for a year. That winter we spent in Bella Coola on the coast, a place I would come back to many times in later years. When money ran out life got serious again and I went back to university and married and you know got a job and stuff. My love of writing and my social conscience came together when I enrolled in the media program at college. Those years were the most influential in my life.I think of it as a kind of awakening. It was there with a truly great faculty that I began to question the difference between what was presented as reality and reality itself.
