This is an excellent example of the genre. The characters are engaging, while pleasingly enigmatic. The healthy lashing of well measured humour prevents the tale sinking too far into the dark abyss which often engulfs novels of this ilk, while still providing admirable depths for the reader to ponder.
I was well pleased to detect a literary sirocco which was faintly redolent with traces of masters such as Gene Wolfe and Stephen Donaldson, yet refreshing cool in its own unique way.
In the time honoured fashion, questions are answered with both answers and more questions, leaving the reader to enjoy simultaneous satisfaction and anticipation, yet not the frustration which often haunts this mechanism.
And I'm a huge fan of the "A Storm Is Coming" motif, which is finely executed in this instance.
I can't wait to see what else this very constructive author has lurking in his literary toolbox.
