I have read Robin Knight's dispatches since we first met when he was based in South Africa during apartheid. I have followed him as he moved round the world and what a wonderful guide he has been: reporting coolly, intelligently, insightfully and always with knowledge. He is the ultimate professional. In "A Road Less Travelled" he not only looks again at places and situations he has reported but reveals stories behind the stories. It is startling, and dismaying, to learn that a foreign correspondent of such quality had to struggle so much to get his reports into print. There are plenty of anecdotes, such as a reminder of the Cold War era in the scary, gripping details of how the Soviet authorities set him up and drugged him, with his wife, Jean, in response to his critical reporting. - Benjamin Pogrund, Jerusalem
