  • From a Feudal Isle to Aotearoa on May 18, 2011

    I had fun reading about events and places that are on the edge of my memory. I recall sitting in the middle seat in the van, long roads, wild, rocky rivers, sandflies. Even now, I still find the gentle hum of a motor reassuring when sleeping (like on a ship), or the drumming of rain on a metal roof. I hope others will enjoy reading this as much as I did, and some of those sketches are pretty good too... /Roy (yes, the one in the book)

    I grew up on Sark. I still, to this day, prefer misty, windy, rainy weather, with the sounds of the sea and seagulls. I think of walking along the roads back from school, looking at the dog daisies and other flowering weeds, side-stepping the horse manure. Going to the shop one day as a youngster of about 5 to spend my pocket money on sweets and getting there only to be devastated to realise I'd left it on the kitchen table but being able to still buy something; "I'll get it from Chris later" the shop keeper had said. A small community in a hard, beautiful place with people who know and care about each other - this book took me right back to those early days of my childhood - and a good read besides...
