  • An Independent Woman:Redwoods Trilogy Book One on Oct. 25, 2012

An Independent Woman by Kate Loveday (Historical Romance) London in 1878 was a very hard place for the working classes. So it is for Kitty Morland, a young woman in service of a large house. When she yields to temptation one fateful day the consequences of her action force her to flee to the other side of the world, to the small timber town of Bulahdelah in the mid-north coast of New South Wales, home of the giant cedar trees. This is a very picturesque area and the author is able to transport us to the very essence of this heavily timbered area. Having married William Barron, the son of an aristocrat, they live in this small regional community, although it is not a happy marriage. William is not a good manager and Kitty with her pregnancy almost due is dealt a savage blow. Forced to fend on her own and rely upon her wits, this strong young woman establishes a successful business and makes her mark in the world. A man from her past re-appears and Kitty is forced to make a decision that will affect the rest of her life. Rufe Cavanagh will play a part in the story that is Kitty Barron’s. More than a romance, An Independent Woman is the story of the hardship s experienced by women in Australia, and England in the late 19th century. It was not until the Married Women’s Property Act of 1893 came into effect that a woman ceased to be a chattel of her husband and all her possessions became his at marriage. Now a woman could own property in her own right and her possessions remained hers. An intelligent and insightful story of the life style of early Australian development and the harsh life endured by many in building a new country. The story is well crafted and the characters are real people who leap of the page at us. An excellent first book in a trilogy, The Redwood Series.
