David McDonald

Biography

David McDonald is something of a unique individual and confounds many with his achievements, having suffered five strokes he has impaired short term memory and impaired cognitive skills.
Despite this he has written seven books of War Poetry, all of which are well received, and another Novella, he struggles with grammar and refuses to surrender to his physical and mental limitations.
I served with David during his eighteen years of Military Service, an outstanding soldier he has used his past to inspire his present in his writing.
I leave it to the reader to decide but this man is worth the respect so many of us who know him display, he is one of the few who fights for the many.

John Holdsworth

RHF

His first publications, There are no Unwounded Soldiers, I Never Raised My Son to be a Soldier and Every Soldier Needs a Soul form a Trilogy of poetry and display his ability to use words to tell stories.

The Lost Century is a result of his prolific writing during his treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and contains some hard reading.

The latest and most acclaimed of his works are "A Heart Without Words" and "A Heart with Wounds" which form a brace of books dealing with Emotions.

Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in the Highlands of Scotland, the history and identity linked to the area was a factor in my passion for history, My family was large and although money was tight I learned the value of a loving environment.
When did you first start writing?
I have written since my teens though not seriously however that changed in 2000. I had served 18years in the Armed Forces and in 1991 I was diagnosed with Combat Related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, my life was in turmoil and collapsing around me.
Six years of treatment achieved little and I was abandoned to manage as best I could, at that point I began writing to express my emotions.

My Poetry has over time moved from the dark, raw and angry truths of my past and the hard emotions of War and surviving PTSD to the warmth and love and positivity I now live within. Art has for a long time been used by therapists to aid those suffering Trauma, Brain Injury, Depression and Physical Disabilities with success, Poetry is quite simply a different form of art and one of great potential

In every Conflict there are unsung heroes, those who go beyond the call of duty but go unrewarded. All wars produce tales that fascinate the young and horrify the old, our duty is to remember the truth of those who fought.

David's poetry brings a new hard unyielding honesty to work of this kind, the reader is consumed by the barbarity and then lifted by the softness of the outcomes. His poems bring a myriad of situations under the microscope, all of them events not fantasy and though gritty there is a softness to the outcomes that portray a man who has been at war with himself.

I wrote this book of poetry for one reason, there is a danger of over exposure within the media to war. The public are not aware of the emotions soldiers (Male and Female) and their families must confront, the risks of damaging relationships are considerable. If we owe anything to those who are sent to secure our freedom and safety it is to understand so we may empathise.

I am very new to Flash Fiction as a reader though I have written some before, I was like a small child in a candy shop with this book. So much to indulge yourself with and such an erotic experience deciding which next. The book contains entertainment in spades but be prepared to indulge all of your emotions. I read it today and i only bought it today (only meant to browse through but could not stop) Great read get it and let your mind, heart and soul roam free
  • Flash Fiction Addiction 22 Short Short Stories Volume II on Oct. 05, 2011

I think I need to be careful here, I would not want to give away any storyline endings. Believe me this lady has been busy concocting quite a few which will completely blindside you, you won't see the finale coming. Garden hones her ability to entertain, enthral, surprise and scare the pants of you. She has surpassed a brilliant first book with her depictions and her crafted stories in Volume 11, an excellent read. The first story "An Accident is passionate and heart breaking until you reach the end and you think "WHERE THE HELL DID THAT COME FROM". From that moment on the stories engage you in so many ways, some of them are darker than others but the story lines?? This lady just never stops "The Inheritance" is a warning to all families. I thoroughly enjoyed my introduction to Flash Fiction with "Addiction 22" and Garden has ensured my continued enjoyment of it with "Volume 11", the speed with which you are engaged by the storyline and the characters is refreshing. Don't make the mistake of thinking this is simply short stories, if the story was not good enough it is too short to stand on its own and these all do that excellently. This is one recommendation (I do not make many) I make heartily, for the combination of passion, mystery, dark powers and human love this is the one to read.
