The thing I enjoyed most about Dangerous Times was that Frey managed to capture my attention at the beginning of the book. Many indie writers make the mistake of dragging out the start of their novel by implementing too much back story just to make sure that the reader really gets what's happening. There was none of that with this book. Frey starts the story with the start of the story. In my opinion, he does it quite effectively.
The story starts out with the main character lying to his wife about where he's going. Readers have to wonder why he would lie. What is he doing? Is he going to meet a lover? Why lie to his wife? Why worry about covering his tracks? Quickly, the reason becomes very obvious and you'll be taken on a roller coaster from chapter one until the story is complete.
