You just published your first novel, "The Adored." When did you first start writing?
I wrote short stories in high school, a lot of them. Sister Julie Marie told me when I was 13, "Thomas, you should write." Writing is a very creative process and it gives me enormous satisfaction - dreaming up stories, inventing characters and putting them in conflict.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"The Adored" started out exactly as it finished. Innocent people get hurt every day; some lose their life, others their freedom - none more so than black men. Then I wanted to contrast that with the wealthy - largely unaware of the gift they have been given to have been born in America. Some of the wealthy are careless about their lives, others about their wealth. Finally, I tried to show the enduring virtue of love; no matter the circumstance of one's life, love is there to be received.
