This book is a fabulous read. The dialogue and depth of character development are outstanding. It is so engaging that it draws you in until you truly feel the burden of the decisions that these young men are being "forced" to make...forced by the slow paradigmatic shift of the common American; not wanting to, but knowing they must. The soul of this book is the conflict within ourselves to either willfully remain ignorant or work to be free; to do what might appear wrong to some, but for the right reasons. When ignorance is indeed bliss, this struggle tears at our very core, but at some point we all must make that call. Thomas Merton said, "One of the central issues in the prophetic life is that a person rocks the boat, not by telling slaves to be free, but by telling people who think they are free that they’re slaves." With this book, Michael Scott has "rocked the boat" in a major way! He is challenging common paradigms, inviting all readers to think about our place in history, to look deep into our hearts for that sacrificial call, and to make the hardest of decisions. I encourage you to read this book. It will engage both your mind and your heart. It is well worth your time. It may just inspire your to, as Gandhi said, "be the change you want to see in the world."...whatever that may look like for you. Peace, T. Holley
