Violet Fulford Williams

Biography

Born in 1888 in South Africa, Violet Malet Veale was taken to England by her grandparents to be brought up in rural Devonshire. She married her childhood sweetheart, Harry Fulford Williams, an Anglican cleric, just before the outbreak of the First World War and lived with him and their children all over India during the last days of the British Raj. On the eve of World War 2, she and Harry were sent to neutral Lisbon where her vicarage became a clearing house for refugees fleeing war-torn Europe. She published her memoirs in 1968, some ten years before her death in her home city of Exeter. Her book is published by her family who think that her vivid portrayal of a bygone world, and extraordinary stories deserve a wider audience.
